How the countertop cost calculator works

It multiplies your square footage by the installed price per square foot for the stone and color level you pick, then adds the extras one line at a time: edge finishing by the linear foot, cutouts by the piece, and removal and waterfall ends as flat amounts. Plumbing is not included, so budget separately for a plumber to disconnect and reconnect the sink, usually $125 to $350. You get a low, typical, and high number because the same stone can land anywhere in its range depending on the slab.

Example: an L-shaped kitchen with an island in quartz

A 120-inch run and a 96-inch run at 25.5 inches deep, plus a 72 by 36 inch island, is about 56 square feet. At the Better level for quartz, $70 to $95 per square foot, the tops come to about $3,940 to $5,340. Add removal of the old tops ($150 to $500) and a bullnose edge on about 36 linear feet ($10 to $20 per foot) and the estimate is about $4,450 to $6,550, or $5,500 typical.

How to measure your countertops

Measure each straight run along the wall in inches, end to end. Standard base cabinets take a counter about 25.5 inches deep. Length times depth, divided by 144, is the square footage. For an L or U shape, measure one leg to the wall and the next leg from the edge of the first, so the corner square is only counted once. Measure the island separately, length by width.

Key terms

  • Square feet vs. linear feet. Stone is priced by the square foot of counter surface. Edge profiles are priced by the linear foot of finished edge, usually the front edges plus the sides of the island.
  • Fabrication. Cutting, edging, and polishing the slab to the template of your cabinets. It is built into the per-square-foot price here.
  • Color level. Stone yards group slabs into price levels. Basic covers common colors, Better the popular veined looks, Premium the rare and designer slabs.
  • Seams. Where two pieces of stone meet. Long runs and big islands may need more than one slab and more seams.

What changes your countertop price

  • The slab you pick. Within the same stone, a common color and a rare one can be twice the price. The Natural Stone Institute's countertop comparison chart lays out how the materials differ.
  • Layout. L shapes, U shapes, and large islands can mean a second slab or extra seams.
  • Cutouts and edges. Each cooktop, prep sink, or decorative edge adds fabrication time.
  • Doing the cabinets at the same time. Refinishing tired cabinets along with new tops gets you a new-looking kitchen without the cost of replacement cabinets. See how our countertop service works.
